Idiot Secretaries Vs Graphic Designers
I was burning the midnight oil, a couple of nights ago, getting a bit of needed inspiration for my Blog and I came across quite an amusing article listed somewhere on http://www.popdex.com. This particular blogger was reviewing a book called Design for non-Designers. And the review for the book was pretty good. What got me was the comments made by a community of Graphic Designers moaning about this book. One in particular said "That means more Idiot Secretaries are going to take work away from us!"
Now dear reader, I do confess that I used to be one of those "Idiot Secretaries", well a Sales Administrator, to be precise. I spent 10 years working in Administration. But before these darling graphic designers label me as any form of an idiot, might I also add that for the last 4 years of that, I worked in a Marketing Department for 2 different companies, one for a major multinational and one for a small business. As a result, my targeted market is for small/medium businesses in the local area. Hardly an area for budding young artists, I am sure you'll agree.
These guys must have met a few inefficient individuals behind a desk and then branded every office worker an "Idiot Secretary" thereafter. Can I do the same? Out of the handful of Graphic Designers I've met, the majority were unbelievably obnoxious!
Now Idiot Secretary or Obnoxious Graphic Designer, the lowdown is, if you do not know the first thing about marketing, then don't design websites (Certainly not for any kind of business). Secretaries know about presentation and what works in a professional environment, graphic designers know, well graphics.
But the Internet World is full of Secretaries and Graphic Designers, and thats what makes the Internet such a wonderful and varied place. I am happy designing and advising small businesses into getting their new website online and running. Graphic Designers worldwide can do online branding (for companies that have Marketing Managers), design graphics for MTV, oh the list is endless for both worlds.
Some c'mon Guys be a bit more open-minded please.

Being a Graphic Designer myself couldn't help smile :) It's so true, labels might work for getting hired, but at the end it's a matter of meeting your client's needs.
