Patience is the Name of the Game
You have your brand spanking new website all online and ready to attract hoards of customers. As a result you want to get onto all the search engines just to stand the best possible chance of catching those said prospective customers when they come looking for products/services relating to yours.
So you submit to search engines like Yahoo, Google and MSN, and then days become months, become two months, 3 months and so on. But then you think, whats going on? I should be listed by now, I should be getting loads and loads of visitors by now.
So what do you do? Well the answer is simple: Wait.
Think about it, exactly how many websites like yours are created per day (and worldwide in some cases)? A lot. Its not just a case of a search engine web crawler coming to visit your site and then thats it there you are you're listed on our server, expect to get loads of hits now. Thank you very much and goodnight. The web crawlers do visit new websites, but they also revisit existing websites, to see if they have been changed and is it a change for the better, or if they don't exist anymore.
Then you have the Internet Directories that are human-edited like DMOZ and Yahoo Directory. They receive your link and then sift through every last page to make sure that a) you picked the right category, b) You're playing fair (no dirty tricks) or c) Your site isn't pornographic, hate-related or just nasty in general. That takes a long time and to receive a voluminous amount of links per day and having to check through every single page on every single site is bound to take a while.
Bear in mind that some websites/directories state that you may have to wait at least 7 months before you get listed on their site (known as an organic listing - please don't ask me why).
To get the results quicker, opt for CPC (Cost-per-Click) marketing which would work short-term until your site is organically listed or paid inclusion in general. Though for both methods mentioned, be prepared to dig deep into your pocket as these come at a price.
Whatever you do, DO NOT keep re-submitting your site to the search engines. Excessive re-submissions are seen as spam and will get you blacklisted altogether.
If you do opt to use a company that specialises in search engine optimisation and rankings, do your homework on them, ask for a testimonial from recent customers. Ask them what they can do for your website and how they can achieve this. If they mention any tactic thats seems odd (for example font which is roughly the same colour as you website's background and stuffing keywords into your page at every given opportunity), then bow out as quick as you can. These methods are dirty, deceptive and Search Engines will again put you on their ever-increasing black list. Also to use such tricks on a visitor to your website, they will also disappear as soon as they realise that they have been deceived in any way.
How many of us have gone onto a website thinking it sounds exactly what we are looking for on the search engine, realised that it was nothing that we were after and not hung around a moment longer?
Exactly.
